at Lumière 2011
Today’s Liberation features a long interview by Fabrice Rousselot with Jerry Schatzberg, who will come to Lumière 2011 to present Puzzle of a Downfall Child, « a rare masterpiece. »
« When the film was released at the San Francisco Festival in 1970, although Pierre Rissient, the film critic, was not inclined to go to see what he described as a “ rubbish film by a fashion photographer ”, in the end he had nothing else to see that day and he loved the film. Rissient then said to Universal that he wanted to promote the film in France and that was the beginning of the love story between Puzzle of a Downfall Child and France. »
« I wanted to show how ephemeral models are and the inflexible side of the fashion world, with girls who last a few years and then disappear. It’s a kind of metaphor of the way the fashion world operates. »
« Faye Dunaway may be cinema’s last diva (…) When I told her about the story, she was very enthusiastic. I didn’t necessarily think of her for the role, but she stood out very quickly at the heart of the project. »
Distributed by Carlotta Films, a restored copy of Puzzle of a Downfall Child will again be screened in Parisian cinemas on Wednesday 28th September.
